Why does vacuuming all the air out of a trash bag demonstrate atmospheric pressure?
In chemistry to demonstrate atmospheric pressure my teacher sucked the air out of a large garbage bag with a student inside the bag. Don't worry, the student's head was not in the bag. The result was as if the student was "shrink wrapped" and felt a pressure all around them.
What is the science behind this? I have yet to hear a great explanation.
A balloon normally has the same pressure on the inside as on the outside. We don't feel air pressure because our bodies have air inside them and there is an equal balance of air pressure inside and out. If instead, we go up to the mountains, the air pressure drops a little and our ears "pop" because the gas expands a little bit.
Air pressure pushes on us with about 14.7 pounds per square inch. That's over a ton of force per square foot! The shrink-wrapped student felt the force of the air pressure because there was substantially more pressure outside the bag than inside the bag. Ever seen a soda can crushed after a small amount of water is heated to boiling and the can is placed upside-down in cool water? Same idea, in that the atmospheric pressure crushes the can.
